As this kshetra was tuned into Dhakshina Kailas by Lord
Maheswar, so as to be within the easy reach of his bhakthakoti in
the beginning of creation itself, it has such abundant corpus of
evidence that scores of racks are overflowing with rare books
dealing with the Siva lilas. Among the scriptures mention must
be made of great works, like Suta Samhita, Surya Samhita,
Parvatha Mahatmyam, Suvaran Mukhari Mahatmyam, Ashtadhyayi,
Sivapuranam, Skanda puranam kenopanished etc. Every writer,
or saint in rhapsody or tranquility emptied his soul; eulogising the
glory of the Lord, for its history is as old as the universe of the
master - pieces, Mahakavi Durjati's Srikalahasteeswara
Mahatmyam shines resplendent
as a dazzling diamond set in a glittering gold. It perches the highest place and
a reading metamorphoses even a hardened atheist into devout theist of non-pareil
fame, surpassing even the inimitable Kannappa Nayanar. The Sthalapuranam
supplies many such fantastic accounts that consume days and nights of incessant
study. So it is enough, if attention is paid to three episodes instrumental in
giving to this kshetra the holy name of Srikalahasti. Its antiquity though dates
back to krita yuga and spans over the other three yugas, only a few episodes
stand out prominent, and among them four are taken for full treatment.
