Pushkaram
is generally a water festival celebrated at regular intervals on the
banks of famous rivers, numbering twelve. And it is river worship,
but not water carnival It comes once in twelve years. The sanctity
attached to the river waters then is exceedingly immense that it
exhilarates the orthodox at its mere mention. From time immemorial
this grandiose occasion is being celebrated with unparalleled
religious fervour, and theists participate in it with a zeal
infinite, believing that a bath in the river then bestows
emancipation. Many kinds of rituals are enjoined by the scriptures
and, if they are strictly adhered to, they confer several merits and
give consolation to the participants. Rituals like bathing, fasting,
gifting, meditating, feeding , pindapradan, if strictly followed,
one gets liberation and attains jeevan mukti. Religionists await
these water festivals and feel their life become charithartha, if
they observe several scriptural injunctions enjoined.
