Famous
as Ugrasthan both in legends and history, this Sakti-Peeth has a long story woven
with several anecdotes connected with three archamurtis - Tara, Eakjata and Neel
Saraswati. Its location in Mithila region ruled over by king Janaka has another
plus point for its religious importance. To crown as it were, it is one the
Sakti-Peethas, where Mother Sati's eyes fell when Lord Siva whirled in a frenzied
mood during Tandava nritya with the corpse of Sati on his shoulders. In Tantric
lore, this Sakti-Peeth occupies a pre-emeninet place. On account of the
installation of three powerful mortis, its fame spread far and wide and has been
luring a steady influx of yatris throughout the year. The number of
beneficiaries who were lifted by those mortis are a legion and among them
Brahmarishi Vasista finds a mention The three archamurtis worshipped are
independent, but united since they are installed in one place. They are in
Kumari forms The Tantric literature mentions the existence of many more murti's
along with a large tank here, but all went of existence due to ravages of
nature.
In
the beginning as the word goes all these powerful deites were found under a
tree and worship was offered to them with great devotional zeal. A temple was
built by Maharani Padmavathi Devi of Dharbhanga when her spouse was cured from leprosy
by tile blessings of this Devi.
