This
ancient shrine has a fascinating legend that enthrall the listeners of either
gay or grave type; for it brings to light the perversity, rather perseverance of
Mother Mahalakshmi's, one of the legend vividly portrays an episode highlighting
how She maintained her dignified role by her unyielding tenacity which seems
justifiable. The Belur temple though claims and exhausts all the superlatives,
such as it is the first and final word in the sculptured, architecture
monuments, the standing specimen of chisel work of non-pariel excellence, in
black stone; the Hoyasalas' Kirthi Pataka; the tourists' open air museum, etc.,
it recalls certain inauspicious moments and acrimonious tussles. And lo! they
also caused relentless anger to Mother Lakshmi, who chose to keep up her
stubborness and adamancy till enternity, it seems. This is neither poetic fancy,
nor lunatic's blabbering, as evidenced by her remaining on her hill abode,
despite her Lord was forcibly dismantled and transferred to the marvelously built Belur temple under extraordinary
circumstance and making her lord Vishnu
visit her regularly. A little back ground is quite expedient to know the reason
for this.
