  PARUR - MOOKAMBIKAI TEMPLE

According to Sthalapurana, once a certain priest, who traveled from North Canara by walk rested under the cool shade of the banyan trees for a while When about to resume his journey he lifted his umbrella to take it with him.  But lo! it had stuck fast into the earth that all his might went up in smoke.  This mysterious phenomenon was beyond his brain to account for its occurrence. Forth with he consulted some scholarly astrologers who conveyed that Mother Saraswathi who followed him from the beginning of his journey; did not like to leave this sacrosanct spot. Realising the potency of the place, he caused a beautiful temple built at once. When money flows, will not towers pierce into heavens to enter into colloquy with deities and acquaint them with the glory of earthly abodes? Having settled in an elegantly built mandir she started raining boons on the deserving bhaktas. Soon her fame spread far and near and made this into an unparalleled Saraswati kshetra. And indeed Kerala does not possess a similar temple amidst a pond surrounded by crystal clear water. Among the yearly functions, the Navaratri festival takes precedence over others, when lakhs of Saradopasakas and budding literary men congregate and celebrate many auspicious function with unprecedented pomp and splendour. Among the choice vazhivadus held dear to the heart of the Mother, Payasam comes first followed by Appam, Tirummaduram etc. The daily offering of a special Naivedyam called Kashayam is said to cure all physical ailments. Hence heavy crowds then. This shrine is immensely holy to knowledge loving Hindus. .

It lies in Parur accessible by bus and train.
