Among
the temples built and lavishly endowned by the Rathor clan of Rajputs, claiming
descent from Sri Rama, the seventh incarnation of Maha Vishnu, fifteen of them
are found in the village of Osian lying at a distance of 65 km from Jodhpur.
They belong to two distinct groups-Harihara temples and Surya-Mahishasura
Mardini temples. And were built in the eighth and ninth centuries. They are
profusely adorned. The Mahishasura temple is a standing specimen of superb
Pratihara's lavish patronage and mirrors their refined taste. Exquisite carvings
on walls and pillars serve a grand feast to the eyes and exhibit the sculptor's
superb skill and inimitable craftsmanship. This marble jewel dazzling brightly
makes the visitors gape and gaze for long. The Mother is popularly called Pipla
Devi and was known for her bounteous grant of boons. It possesses a principal chamber and a spacious assembly hall ornamented with 30 pillars and masterly
designed pilasters. Though in ruins now its majesty and imposing stature beckon
ardent adoration. More than commoners, scholars and archaeologists visit and
admire it profusely. The other temples like Mahavira lying in its vicinity too
draw the tourists and theists by their shere excellent artistry breaking through
every frame of construction.
It is in Osian village, accessible by bus from Jodhpur lying
6 km off it.
