This
ancient port town of Chola empire at once flashes across our minds the tragic
tale of chaste Kannaki and her cleat lord Kovalan. And it is the seat of those
historical characters who trailed a blaze across the pages of both history
legends arid literary pieces. The immortal hero and heroine of Silappa-thikarain, the priceless gift of langovan took its birth and breath here, and
they come to life as if by magic, if once its name is uttered although the old
town was submerged in the sea. But tile government's sincere efforts to revive its past splendour has presented to the tourists and theists
many monuments like Art Gallery, Pavai Manram, Elangi Manram and Nedungal Manram.
Along
with them a beautiful little shrine dedicated to Kaliamnia is drawing theists in
large numbers among whom the fishermen's community form majority. It is a
modern shrine modest in size and adornments, but the faith it installed in the
minds of locals, particularly fishermen is beyond the range of words. The Mother
never lets down any of her genuine adorers.
Hence,
the fishermen before launching their operations invariably pray soulfully to her
for safe return. And their prayers are answered to their immense satisfaction. For
scholars who are well versed in Tamil Classics, this place affords unforgettable experience and they feel like wandering
amidst history
and taking a stroll through time. It is a charming shore resort visited by
unending streams of tourists and gay picnickers. For theists, this Kaliamman
shrine nearby Siva temple are worth an indispensable visit.
It lies near Sirkali at a distance of 10 km, accessible by bus.
