This Saiva kshetra came into prominence even during Dwaparayuga, due to the fact of building of the temple and installation of the archamurti by Balarama, the immortal brother of Lord Sri Krishna. It lies at the confluence of Nagavalli and Vamsadhara rivers, so held in high esteem. The annual festival celebrated on Maghasuddha Chaturdasi lures large crowds, and gala performances take place.
