AIHOLE
- ARDHANAREESWARA DEVALAYA |
|
It
is a treasure-trove housing more than hundred temples during the
heyday of the eminent rulers. Some of the rock-cut temples
enshrining Sivalingas became very famous and attracted thousands of
asthikas and paryatakas then. The Ardhanareeswara form of Siva was
found very popular here even as early as in the 5th century A.D. The
apsidal construction was given supreme importance and the royalty
patronized it. In the fort itself there are more than
fifty temples built for all Hindu gods and Jain Thirthankaras. It is
with this alone Aihole etched its name on the pages of history.
It is 19 km off Patadakkal from Hunsund town, commanding all
transport facilities.
