In
the union territory of Pondicherry, there are many ancient shrines
built by Cholas etc., ' and out of 350 in the entire state, 75 are
dedicated to Lord Vinayaka, as he is the favourite and popular god
here. Among the Saivate shrines, Vedapuriswar with its Swayambhu
linga tops the list. Here regular worship according to Saivagamasis
offered and festivals are celebrated with due zeal. The other
Sivaalayas like Tirukameswarar temple at Villianur and
Panchanadeeswarar temple at Tiruvandedar and city temples dedicated
to Siva are most visit-worthy. These temples being ancient have all
the component parts like prakaras,
towers, injunctions. And minishrines
etc., built according to sastric so, Siva mahima permeates the
whole area and lifts the souls when prayed.
They lie within short distances -from Pondy and are accessible by
four wheelers.
