THE LEGEND

The Sthalapurana narrates that once Devendra visited Koteswara Devalaya straight during the non-working hours and was repelled by Nandiswar, keeping guard the temple. Being the King of kings and God of gods and driven out without decorum was something which he could not stomach it. It divested him of his heavenly status and kingly powers. It affected his mind at once. He experienced reeling sensation of head and fell down swooned.  It was at that crucial moment, he prayed to Surya Bhagawan, the Karmasakshi to come to his rescue. Pitying him, the Lord advised him to build one temple for him and worship devoutly for instant sure relief. Soon after regaining senses, he did as bidden by the Sun-god. The Purana ends with introduction of regular worship and the miracles that happened due to Surya Bhagawan's boundless compassion of adorers.
