Then
began a period of misery thrust upon him by an endless series of
tortures-hard manual work, lack of rest, inadequate diet, insanitary
cell, constant heckling etc. They sucked up the sap of his body
and debilitated him to the extent of sinking any moment. But they
dared not enter or interfere with his ishtadaivam - Sri Rama and put
out the ever burning flames of bhakti. He started pouring out his
unalloyed bhakti in the form of songs that enriched the religious
literature of the world. Each of the gems that fell from his lips is
in praise of Lord Sri Rama's glory and his boundless faith in
him.
He
appealed to him for instant relief; when torture subjected his
physical frame to unendurable agony. Failing to sight the relief, he
addressed his entreaties to Mother Sita and prayed for her
intervention immediate, be telling about his plight to Sri Rama thus
- "when you draw near him pressing his cheeks tenderly at the
time of making love... you and that indweller of all human souls,
all alone on the same bed....." He went further and ripped open
his soul and said that he did not utilise the state fields for his
comfort or prosperity, they were used for building temple and making
jewels for the deities, the fact of actual occurrence. When the
relief was not sighted, he tried for suicide too.
