THE BOAT CITY
This sacred place is also called Thonipuram - The Boat city. It has a
legend and a queer one at it. During the
Mahapralaya, the whole earth was submerged under water, except this region, which for
mysterious reasons was dry and unaffected by
the fury of the flood.
Lord Maheswar accompanied by
Parvathi roved to this place, then standing high above the flood. Charmed by its sanctity, he made it
his abode. And so this was given the name of the boat city. And Sirkali the present name
it bears is due to Kali's offering prayers to the Lord with great fervour. It was also
called Sri
Kalipuram, and Sirkali is a shortened one and it is now popularly known by this only. To its
North-West, lie the other two shrines named already.
