Bholapur
- Radhamadhava Mandir
The
Bholapur region of Bengal, the birth place of the world famous poet-singer
Jayadev is soaked, as it were, in Vaishnavism and there are many places dotted
with Radha Madhava shrines resonant with the soul-lifting songs from Geet Govind
almost everyday. Kanduli village though not produced this immortal poet-singer,
is still preserving the very same Radha Madhav image and is devoutly worshipped
by thousands of people along with the self-same aasana used by Jayadev for
composing songs. Maharaj of Burdwan built a befitting grand temple for the holy
icon and introduced regular prayers for it. To cap it all, there is an annual
Mela held here for over centuries, and it is the star-attraction of the Birbhum
area. On the auspicious occasion, a community of wandering ministrels
specialised in singing Jayadeva's master-pieces visit in their thousands and
convert this place into a veritable Dwaraka.
It lies near
Bholapur of West Bengal, accessible by bus.
