THE GUPTA AGE |
|
Indeed, Indian
intellect in all branches reached the acme of excellence during this Age, in art, science
and literature. Indian culture and civilization attained a unique stage of development. It
was the Age of Kalidasa who wrote the immortal Sakuntala, Raghuvamsa, Kumarasambhava and
other plays and poems. The Puranas were given finite shape at this period.
Besides poetry and drama, Sanskrit prose too flourished, because it was the age when
Dandin, Subandhu and Banabhatta, the masters, lived. Amara the lexicographer flourished in
this Age. On the side of philosophy, the Shad-darsanas or the six systems of
philosophy which are the greatest achievements of Indian intellect took final shape.
It is also the period when Buddhist philosophers like Vasubandhu lived. |
