THE GUPTA AGE |
|
The sculptures
and paintings of this period which are called classical, still remain the finest
productions of art.
The Gupta Age is memorable for the fact that the Brahminical religion came into being at
this time. With its vast Pauranic literature, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and
of course the Dharmasastras, the Age completed its break with the Vedic Age and laid the
solid foundation of modern Hinduism which is really the culmination of a rich heritage of
diverse people and their faiths. Two distinct Hindu
cults Vaishnavism and Saivism took shape in this Age elbowing out Buddhism and Jainism.
The Alwars and the Nayanmars irrigated this virgin religious field with their nectarine
outpourings of hymns for this plant Hinduism to grow. |
