THE TEMPLES IN MIDNAPORE |
|
The official
wrath at the Swadeshi movement in the Midnapore district was acute. The famous Midnapore
Bomb Case where Raja Narendra Lal Khan a very high dignitary of the Raj family of Narajole
and Mr.K.B.Dutt a very prominent Barrister of Midnapore were involved by the Police for
planting a bomb was proved to be a Police concoction ultimately in the British
Courts. This was one of the earliest Swadeshi cases in Bengal. The revolutionaries of Bengal counted a lot on the Midnapore
district andMidnapore never failed in finding men and money in the bid for freedom either
through violent means or through Non-co-operation Movement. WhenGandhiji gave his call and
launched the great Non-co-operation Movement this district again came to the forefront.
The spirit of independence is an indigenous legacy in this district.
In the pre-British time portions of Midna- pore district were held by Sardars who
would carve out small dominions of their own. Some of them assumed dignified names and
claimed high family lineage, which can seldom be proved. This is exactly what had happened
in the other
neighboring districts of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. Due to the difficult terrain and the
jungle warfare method of the indigenous population, it was difficult for any one to become
Chatrapati or a Suzerain over a large area. |
