His eyes finally fell on a figure lying on a divinely beautiful cot. The
shapeliness of her limbs and the beauty of her features made Hanumaan imagine it might be
Seeta. He leaped up with joy.
The next instant he cursed himself for his
folly. "Fie, fie," he said to himself, "how foolish have I been! Could
Seeta sleep thus carelessly, covered with jewels, in a stranger's chamber? The very
thought is a sin." And he was overwhelmed with shame and sorrow at his error.
Then he said to himself: "Because she
would not yield to him, this Raakshasa must have killed her. What use is there in
