Yama Dharma Raja
was so much vexed with the problem of handling the souls of the numerous men and women
that he
beseeched Lord Brahma to provide him with assistance particularly to maintain the record
of the good and bad deeds of the in numerable souls who come to him after death. At the request of Brahma, Lord Siva bade Chitragupta to undertake this
job. Lord Chitragupta is so meticulous in his recording that He spares none (not even
Gods) from what is rightfully due. Legend has it that Devendra and Indrani prayed to Lord
Siva to bless them with a progeny.
Lord Siva ordered Chitragupta to take birth as a child of
Indrani. But Chitragupta would have none of it. He bluntly told Lord Siva that Indrani was
not destined to have any child and it would not be proper for him to go against destiny. |
