THE HARE AND THE ELEPHANT

They got together one day to take counsel. One hare said: "Those elephants are a danger to us. Some of our brethren have already died. We cannot fight the elephants. They are too strong. How can we stop them from killing any more of us?"

An old hare observed: "True. They are big and strong. We cannot fight them. But if we can frighten them, they will run away! Can any one find a way of scaring the big brutes?"

One clever hare suggested, "In the moon there is a black patch. Everyone says that it is the King of hares. The elephants also think so. So I shall tell the elephants that I am a messenger sent by our king in the moon and thus try to frighten them!"

That is a good idea," said all the other hares.

The next day the clever one went to the elephant king.

From a safe distance, it called out: "O Elephant King!"

"What do you want?" asked the elephant king.

"I am a messenger sent by the King of hares. I come from the moon!"
