At this time
Siva in the form of a hunter armed with bow and arrows, and followed by his huntress wife,
was chasing a wild boar. When the boar saw Arjuna, it charged him furiously, Arjuna
immediately shot an arrow at the boar. The hunter too aimed his arrows. This arrow first
struck Arjuna's arrow and pushed it aside and then flew on to strike the boar. The boar
fell dead.Seeing this, Arjuna became angry.
He said to the hunter:"How dare you kill my game?"
The hunter retorted: "I chased the boar, not you. Why did you shoot? Don't boast
about your strength. Come and fight me if you dare!"
Arjuna let off a shower of arrows at the hunter. But none of them hit him. They all
fell away harmlessly.
Then Arjuna struck the hunter on the head with his bow. The bow was called Gandiva, and
it always instilled terror. But the hunter simply put out his hand and seized the bow from
him.
