Arjuna then
struck the hunter with his word. The sword broke into two.It did not hurt the hunter! Then
he fought with the hunter hand to hand. This time too Arjuna was easily defeated.
At once Arjuna knew it was not an ordinary hunter he was fighting. He felt humble, and
sat down and began to meditate on God Siva.
Slowly he realized who the hunter was. When he knew it was God Siva Himself, he fell at
His feet, and pleaded, "God for - give me for fighting you!"
God Siva said: "I forgive you gladly, my child!" And he gave back Arjuna his
bow, Gandiva.
God Siva also gave Arjuna many other powerful weapons.
Pasupati is one ofthe many names of Siva.
The weapon he gave, therefore, is known as 'Pasupatastra.' 'Astra' means weapon. Astras
are divine weapons.
Arjuna felt happy seeing God face to face.
Poet Bharavi has written in Sanskrit a great poem on this incident. The poem is called
Kiratarjuniyam. 'Kirata means hunter.'
