Certain Dharmas
are common to us all. These are known as Samanya Dharmas. Truth, duty, worship of God, is
some Samanya Dharmas. By truth we mean purity of
thought, word and deed or action. We must never think ill of others. Our speech should not
only be true but sweet. Our deeds should be helpful and accepted by the Sastras because we
do not know which action is good. What is good for one may appear harmful to another.
In addition to their common Dharmas, women, for instance,
have a special duty to their husbands and children. Children should, in addition to their
common Dharmas, be obedient to their parents, teachers and elders. The traders should also
serve the community. These special Dharmas are called Visesha Dharmas.
The opposite of Dharma is Adharma. It brings about sin
whose result is suffering. |
