1857 WAR OF INDIAN INDEPENDENCE |

| In the early
years of the British rule in our country, our people became greatly discontented. Both Hindus and Muslims resented the attack on their religions by Christian missionaries. They did not like the British way of eating beef and pork. Taxes were heavy and the peasants felt it unbearable and many cottage industries failed and the workers went out of employment. At that time a military regiment was stationed at Dum Dum near Calcutta. One day in January 1857 a brahmin sepoy came to know that the cartridge used by the military was coated with the fat of the cow and pig . The sepoy had to bite the cap off the cartridge before loading his pistol with it. |
