1857 WAR OF INDIAN INDEPENDENCE

Now, Hindu religion worships the cow and Islam forbids eating the fat of the pig.

So the soldiers who were religious by nature hated to touch the cartridge; much more, biting it. They were upset when they were compelled to do so.

This news about the cartridge spread among all the sepoys of Dum Dum. But even then the Government did nothing to remove this suspicion, but-continued to issue the same cartridges.

The sepoys suspected that the Govern- ment was trying to-convert them into Christians and disrespect their religion.

Out of anger, sepoys in nearby places like Barrackpur and Ranigunj who learnt ‘about the cartridges started setting fire to public buildings and officers’ bungalows. In other
words, they mutinied. For this offence, the
sepoys of this native infantry were dismissed.

On learning about their dismissal, another wing of the sepoys became angry.
