GOPAL KRISHNA GOKHALE

Sabha of which Gokhale became the Secretary.

Gokhale edited a quarterly Journal of the Sabha. This Journal wrote on public questions of the day in frank and fearless manner. He also helped to edit another Journal called Sudharak.

Gokhale was now becoming a public figure. When the Indian National Congress held its session in Poona in 1895, he was the secretary of the Reception Committee. From this session, Gokhale became a prominent member of the Indian National Congress also. He went to England to give evidence on behalf of our country before the Commission.

For a while Gokhale was a member of the Bombay Legislative Council where he spoke strongly against the then Government.

In 1902, Gokhale left the Fergusson College. The farewell speech he delivered at that time is a famous one, which all of you must read.
