IMAGE WORSHIP

IN our country the practice of worshipping God through images is as old as the Vedas.

We also learn from the Vedas that the images were housed in temples.

The Vedas belong to 3000 B.C.

Later on, we find Rishi Patanjali, the grammarian Panini and the great Puranas giving details about the making and the function of images.

According to our ancients, although God is formless, it is necessary to give Him form to help us concentrate on Him.

These forms should be liked and respected by us.

So the followers of Vishnu made images of Vishnu, those following Siva made images of Siva.
