Gandhiji and
other Congress leaders thought over the situation seriously and decided not to lei the
country fall into the hands of another invader.
Even though our people were not trained in modern warfare, he felt that if freedom were
given, our men would fight the enemy tooth and nail.
With these thoughts the Congress passed a resolution in July 1942 at Wardha calling upon
the British to withdraw from the country, allowing the Indian leaders to frame a new
constitution for the country and govern it. This new
Government would deal with the Japanese if they came.
This resolution came to be called the "Quit
India" resolution.
At that time Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of
England. He had no sympathy for Indian aspirations. He therefore refused to listen to
Indias call. |
