Government had already made up its mind not to give independence to India during the war. So even before day broke on the 9th August, all the leaders,
numbering over 148, were arrested. Mahatma Gandhi was taken to the Aga Khans Palace
at Poona and the others to Ahmednagar. News of the arrest spread like wildfire and when
the volunteers gathered in the pandal in the morning, they were severely beaten by the
police.
Because of this historic event, today the Gowalia Tank
Maidan is called the August Kranti Maidan. Disturbances arose through -out the country.
