"The Agamas
are specially revealed for the benefit of the blessed, and they contain the essential
truths of the Veda and the Vedanta." The importance of these sectarian scriptures
lies in the mass of devotional poetry that has sprung up around them in the popular
languages of the country. This shows that they have succeeded in bringing religion to the
hearts of the common people. Lastly, the
Darsanas are schools of philosophy based on the Veda. Each school tries to develop,
systematize and correlate the various parts of the Veda in its own way. The Darsanas are
meant for the scholar and their appeal is to the logical understanding, while the Puranas
and the Agamas are meant for the masses and their appeal is to the imagination
or the heart. |
