The Bhagavan of the
Gita in two well-known verses describes the purpose of an Avatar thus: -
"Whenever there is decay of Dharma, O Arjuna, and an out break of Adharma, I embody
myself. For the protection of the good, for the destruction of the wicked, and for the
establishment of Dharma I
am born from age to age."
These are said to be the ten incarnations of Vishnu: -
- Matsya (The Fish)
- Kurma (The Tortoise)
- Varaha (The Boar)
- Narasimha (The Man-lion)
- Vamana (The Dwarf)
- Parasurama (Rama with the axe)
- Ramachandra (The hero of the Ramayana)
- Sri Krsna (The Bhagavan of the Gita)
- Buddha (The founder of Buddhism)
- Kalki
(The hero on a white horse who is to come at the end of the Kali Yuga).
