The place is a
sacred place and sung by the famous Vaishnavite saints of the South called Alwars, who
refer to this place as Singavetkunram. The
Tirumangai Alwar, who was a famous Vaishnavite saint, has sung the glory of this Lord in
ten immortal verses in his famous Stotra. Tiruvaimozhi.
As the nine shrines are situated within a radius of five
Krosa or 10 miles, this Tirtham is also known as Panchakrosa Tirtham.
Ahobalam is a famous place of pilgrimage especially as
this is the only place where the nine aspects of the Lord or the Nava Narasimhas are
worshipped.
The Nava Narasimhas or the nine varieties of this form of
the Lord Vishnu are worshipped at Ahobalam.
In the Upanishads it is stated that the Narasimhavatara
form is very well suited for worship. It is of the angry type, filled by Nammalwar who is
a great South Indian Vaishnavite saint field Narayana at Vaishnavite saint treats this
form in the same manner.
Sri Sankara in his Karavalambana Stotra says that the Lord
of Kshirodadhi is Lord Narasimha. Tirumangai Alwar in his Periya Tirumoli equates Narayana
with Narasimha. |
