There
are a number of holy Tirtham round the place, the most important of which is Raktakundam. It is stated that Lord Narasimha after killing the demon
Hiranyakasipu washed his gory hands at this Tirtham, and hence the water is still reddish
in appearance.
There is another hill Tirtham called Lanja- koneru, which
is two miles to the north east of the shrine, en route to Bhargava.
It is said that once upon a time acourtesan, on having the
mere darshan of the Lord here, repented of her ways and built the Tirtham to wash off her
sins.
This has its own sanctity. The Ramatirtham is a tank that
has sacred associations and is five miles from lower Ahobalam.
The temple goes back in its history to ancient days.
There are inscriptions to say that the great Vikramaditya
of the Western Chalukya Kings of Kalyan (1076-1106 A.D.) wor- shipped the Moola vigraha of
this temple. |
