A CHINESE TEMPLE |
|
In 1781 he had
submitted a memorial to the Governor-General, Warren Hastings and Members of the Supreme
Council in the course of which he referred to the encouragement he had received by the
grant of land which he had cultivated with some success and complained that his Chinese
labourers were being enticed away by Chinese deserters from the ships in Calcutta. Apparently, Atchew had some popularity as we find a notice was
issued mentioning that Atchew was under the protection of Government, and Government
wished to grant every encouragement to the Chinese colony under his direction and any one
inveigling away the Chinese labourers in his employ under proper indentures for a term of
years would be severely punished. |
