Previously
people going on pilgrimage to Ganga Sagar literally used to bid farewell to their
relatives as they did not know if they would survive the natural calamities of cyclone of
attacks from wild animals and the pirates not to speak of the visitation of the epidemic
of cholera. But now it is easy to reach Ganga Sagar. One has to go to Diamond Harbour by a train or by motor vehicles up to Kaka Dwip
and from their go by a regular steamer or boat to the confluence. During the Makar
mela the railway lines are taken right upto the ghat of the river Ganga and the pilgrims
can straight get down from the trains and board the steamers. The annual melas are now ell
looked after and sanitary
lavatories, volunteer camps, rest-sheds, shops, eating houses etc., are set up. Police
arrangements are also adequate. |
