THE TIBETAN TEMPLE

Although Warren Hastings resigned and went away in the month of 1785, his successor McPherson had approved
of Puran Gir Gossain's mission to Tibet and Puran Gir Gossain went there.  So great was Puran Gir Gossain's prestige.

The temple and monastery known as Bhot-bagan was really set up after the first trade mission.  No sooner Tashi Lama had expressed his desire to Bogle that he wanted to set up a monastery on the bank of river Ganga, Warren Hastings took up the idea.

It was Tashi Lama desire that the monastery will be in the charge of Puran Gir Gossain who was mutually trusted by both Tibet and the Company.  That is why Puran Gir Gossain and the Dasanami
Saivayats came to have the ascendancy at this temple.
