Patna is a
great place of pilgrimage for the Sikhs as this is the birth-place of Guru Govind Singh.
There is a notable Sikh temple known as Harmandir. Patna is also memorable in the history
of the Roman Catholics, as it is Irom Patna that Roman Catholic fathers went to Tibet and
Nepal in the 16th Century.Patna saw the great insurrection of 1857 when the Divisional
Commissioner William Tayler publicly hanged a few Wahabees, to put down the insurrection. Patna
became more important as the administrative headquarters and, when the new province of
Bihar and Orissa was created in 1911, Patna was naturally chosen as the first capital. A
new area was added to the city, which is still known as New Patna. This area has
finearboriculture, roads and houses. After the separation of Orissa in 1936, Patna has
continued in importance as the capital of the Province of Bihar.
From 1911 onwards the tempo of urbanization has quickened and Patna became, the seat of
a High Court, Universities, a very large Secretariat for the Government and numerous
institutions. Patna is now accessible by train roadways, waterways, and airways. Patna has
got wonderful river-front with Ganga flowing nearby. It has an expanding importance as the
State of Bihar has got unique industrial potential having very large mineral belts etc. |
