Introduction
About three miles from Kumbakonam and two from Dharasuram, in Tanjore District, there is a
famous Siva temple known as
Saktimuttam.
'The Goddess is known as Peria Nayagi and the God Sivakozhunteeswarar. The legend goes to
say that Peria Nayagi was in penance at this temple for getting the pleasure of embracing
and kissing the Lord. When pleased with the penance of Peria Nayagi, Siva appeared and
wanted to know what Peria Nayagi desired. When she expressed her desire, God soon
disappeared, and again reappeared in the form of a terrifying fire.
