Introduction
Kumbakonam in the district of Tanjore in Madras State is a sac place for Hindus, having
mythological associations, and
particularly through the Mahamakham Tank where once in twelve years thousands of'
religious-minded Hindus take their holy dip
in the sacred tank, on day of the star Makha in the month of Kumbha. It is said that
pot-containing ambrosia (Amrita) while drifting about in the deluge touched at this spot.
Such spots of rare mythological "antiquity dating back to pre-creation days must have
a corresponding sanctity. Patteswaram temple is one among them. It is located at a
distance of 4 miles from Kumbakonam and is approachable only by a village road.
