Introduction Madras and its environs are known historically to have been busy centres of
cultural and religious activity from very early times. Hence the existence of a number of
important and interesting places along the coast of Madras, such as Tiruvottiyur,
Triplicane, Mylapore, Tiruvanmiyur and Tirupporur, some of which have been important for
Muslims and Christians too.
Almost parallel to the coast and at a distance ranging between
10 and 20 miles may be found places like Chingleput, Puvirundavalli and northern
Tirumullaivayil (different from the Tirumullavasal near Shiyali in the south).
Tirumullaivayil is situated at a distance of about 13 miles to the west of Madras, just
near Avadi where the historic 60th session of the Indian National Congress was held in
January 1955.
