TIRUVOTTIYUR

In Kaverippoompattinam in the Tanjore District of Madras State, there was a great devotee of Siva by name Sivanesar. He belonged to the mercantile community. The name of his wife was Jnana Kalambai. A daughter was born to them.

But Sivanesar wanted to be blessed with a son. He worshipped Lord Siva at Tiruvengadu and was at last blessed with a son. The name given to the child by his parents was Tiruvengadar - one who was born through the grace of the Lord at Tiruvengadu. It is said that Kubera, the Lord of Wealth, himself was born as a child. Later the child came to be known as Pattinathar.
