Expression
of aversion to rats is quite instinctive and natural in view of havoc they
cause. So certain devices are invented to root out the menace they are thrusting
upon. They are no friends to mankind. Though not as poisonous as cobras, or as
ferocious as lions, or tigers, they are not held in esteem despite offering
prayers to their images in temples for being the vehicle of Vinayaka, the
remover of obstacles. The loss they cause to the crops and merchandise is so
enormous, that the figure runs into crore, if correct estimation succeeds. Above
all, their part in the out break of certain epidemics is so fatal that the
thickly populated areas get depopulated in days. Hence the war against them with
several weapons. Though complete success is eluding, trials are being carried in
open fields and closed godowns. This is a visible, concrete phenomenon going on
throughout the world. And it is desirable too.
