The
builders - Badami Chalukyas and Rastrakuts ruling from Kisuvolal; embellished
them with red stone found in abundance in the nearby hills. and lo! the town
Sisuvolal literally means Red Town, known to history as Raktapura--one of the
famous metropolitan cities of ancient India.
Though
the temples built chiefly on the Dravidian style, some of them like Galaganatha,
Papanatha temples are modelled on the Nagara type. Several pouranic episodes
etched masterly on the ceilings and walls are drawn both from Saiva and
Vaishnava mythologies. The superb artistry of the sculptors and the refined
taste of the patrons peep at the viewers from every inch of the construction.
The creditable points are indeed numerous and they cave brought indelible fame
to Karnataka and raised aloft its Kirtipataka higher to the envy of other
states.
