HISTORICITY

The emergence of the potent Vayulinga, as one of the Pancha bhutalingas is known to Kaladevata to such precision that precision too wonders at her exactitude, but the Skanda Purana embodies the glory of this divya kshetra, commencing with the anecdotes of spider, serpent and elephant. History records the building of temple with prakaras, mahadwaras, gopurams, mandapas and the like with the Damarla dynasty. Credit goes to the devout Timma Raya of the Damarla dynasty, a feudal Lord ruling Kalahasti under the hegemony of Sri Ranga Raya, scion of Vijayanagara rulers ruling from his seat at Chandragiri. The present Kalahasti is the gift of Damarla kings, who built it with four broad streets etc. in strict accordance with vastu sastra. To establishing Siva Kesava abheda they built Sri Varadarajaswamy temple along with Sri Kalahasteeswar temple. This Vaishnava temple situated at a short distance is a well maintained one with performance of regular prayers. It is worth a visit. And it rewards infinitely. Keeping in view of the ever increasing influx of yatris, the far-sighted rulers built several choultries for their convenience.
