Ganga-
is brought down to the earth by the deep penance of Bhagiratha and
it came from the holy feet of Sri Mahavishnu, whereas Krishna is the
tejorupa of Lord Mahavishnu -it is his amsa-emerged from the whole
mass of His body. Decidedly, it is greater than Ganga. Moreover, its
very birth and purpose of descent too differ from that of Ganga and
positively it rates hither in every respect. Tradition affirms that
Lord Brahma seeing Yamaloka overflowing with sinners of all types,
decided to put a stop to sinning and relieving them once for all.
Unable to solve the knotty problem by himself, he went to Vaikunta
and narrated what he had observed to Sri Mahavishnu and rayed for
solution. Brooding over it a little, the Lord created a river from a
part of his luminous body and said that he who sees, or thinks, or
praises it, gets purged of his sins, regardless of the type of sin
he committed, knowingly or unknowingly, or done under provocation or
as retaliatory measure. As it emerged from his Nilameghasyamakara -
black-hued body, it partook his colour and so was named Krishnaveni,
an appropriate name at it. In addition, being the Powerful amsa of
Sri Mahavishnu, she never gets her powers diminished, whereas almost
all the rivers lose their purity and sanctity after some yugas.
