SKANDA
PURANA
According
to it, Indrakila a humanist sage once supplicated the Mother
Parvathi to be born to him as daughter to protecting the worlds. She
then said to him "Your desire, dear son, is highly laudable
and your manavatha is exemplary. I will certainly fulfill your
desire, if you turn yourself into a hill." He willingly
accepted. Hence the emergence of Indrakila parvatha and the Mother
taking her seat after the death of Mahishasura for which she
descended to Bhuloka. Haven't scriptures cite several instances of
the renowned Maharshis transforming themselves into hills and rivers
for promotion of dharma and offering asylums to divinities and
tapasothamas. Most of the mountains are but the blessed physical
frames of manavathavadi Maharshis-humanist sages. Hasn't Meru's son
Bhadra transformed himself into Bhadragiri to becoming the permanent
seat to Sri Rama? Indrakila likewise metamorphosed into hill for
making Mother Durga dwell on him eternally. When Durga under the
august name of Kanakadurga took her seat, people heaved a sigh of
relief and enjoyed graceful life; and their dharmika activities went
on uninterrupted. Needless to prolong that the entire region boomed
with round the clock spiritual activities - singing, choral,
instrumental, chiming of bells etc., that made people prosper in
every field of activity. Its spirituality
then onwards started mounting up and seems proceeding to eternity.
It never confined itself to commonalty, but-the royalty of the
distant antiquity too found this hill congenial for spiritual
sadhana,
as exemplified by Arjuna's penance here for
obtaining Pasupatastra.
