ANTIQUITY
OF INDRAKILA MOUNT
The
Indrakila Hills according to certain legends was the manifestation
of the Sailasakti of the Indrakilaparvatha itself. Tradition says
that when the menace of demons - asurabadha went beyond endurance to
the people living in this region, Indrakila- a Sakteya of great name
did severe penance, propitiating of-great Parvathi. When pleased,
she asked him to spell out his desire. Being a highly evolved tapasvi,
he implored her to take here seat on his head for exercising eternal
vigilance over the area to punishing the rocked and rewarding the
genuine devotees with boons. Gratified, she sealed it with her
approval; and after killing the dreadful demons, she made Indrakila
her permanent abode as desired. The power of his penance is still
permeating the whole area and by, the presence of Mother Parvathi in
the role of Durga, it is enhancing the glory of this kshetra. In the
Skanda Purana this accounts is narrated with a slight variation.
