It is this flourishing city that was converted into burial
ground by Virabhadra, at the behest of Lord Siva, it is here Lord Siva started
his Thandava Nritya with Parvathi's corpse on shoulders under ungovernable
indignation caused by the ruthlessness of Daksha; it is to this temple
pushkarini, the Saptarishis brought Godavari water through underground passage
for abhisheka of Lord siva; it is this archamurthi that is worshipped by sungod
both in morning and evening, testified by the falling of sun's rays on the linga
twice; it is here in this sacred temple, the kalyanotsavam of both Siva and
Vishnu are celebrated with great gusto and fanfare
on the same Vedika, same time every year during the Bhishma Ekadasi festival
lasting for about a week; it is this Lord Siva worshipped by Sri Rama in the
Treta Yuga, and Arjuna in Dwapara Yuga,; it is this lord Siva who was immortalized
by Srinatha
Kavisarvabhouma in his Bhimeswara Mahatamyam; it is with the blessing of this Lord
Siva and Manikyamba, Vemulavada Bhimakavi struck terror into the minds of mighty
rulers with his potent words that worked miracles; and finally it is to this
archamurthi the renowned Chalukya Bhima constructed high towers, massive
prakaras,
huge mandapas and mini-shrines inside, and so the temple is fittingly called
Bhimeswaraalayai after him.
