On crossing the Mahadwara, the big Padagaya tank greets our eyes and it has a
very long legend. It is recorded in Puranas that Gayasura - a powerful demon
laid out his huge. body measuring 125 yojanas by 60 yajanas at the behest of
Brahm for doing a great yagna on it for lokakalyana. When he lay with head at
the sacred place called Gaya in Bihar, his legs reached out to Pithapuram, some
thousands of kilometres away. The lake is embodying his legs underneath. So it
is called Padagaya, a very sacred thirtha that relieves one of all sins, if
bathed. Thus this kshetra has awe-some connections with highest deities. The
presiding deity of the shrine Sri Kukkuteswara Swamy's legend is quite awe-some
and to gather with this Sakthi-peetha and Padgaya tank, this has turned out as a
famous Triputi lifting duhkarthis with the unique glory of its kshetram, diavam
and thirtham.
The lies in the taluq head quarters town of Pithapuram lying at a distance of 18
km to Kakinada in the East Godavari Dist. of Andhra Pradesh, accessible by bus
and train.
