The
past of this ancient shrine is as awe-some as its popularity. During its heyday,
there used to be offering of naivedyam
to the goddess with sacrifice of one hundred animals and lighting of one
thousand earthern lamps around a help of cooked rice This deity is said to be
the wife of Jamadagni maharshi and after the severing of head, she assumed fierce
aspect and is receiving tamasika puja, here and with exotic rituals varying from
place to place. Puranas are replete with queer forms of this goddess and blood
curdling prayer services she is receiving. Some legends portray her as the
Universal Mother and a few as Seemadhi devatha. Whatever may be interpretation,
she, is balipriya and appeased with tamasika puja. The statue of this deity is
unusually big and gives darsan in awful form.
There
are two shrines in this village itself and dedicated to same Yellamma under two
different names, such as Ravikanti Yellamma and Modampalli Yellamma. High caste
people offer Satwika pooja at the former, and others tamasika in the latter. And
the two are equally popular, and visitation too is equal but regarding
the granting of boons the latter is extremely compassionate. Daily worship is
conducted in the manner envisaged The annual festival draws unusual a big
number exceeding thousands.
It
lies in near Kaluvakurti of Palamur district of Andhra Pradesh, accessible by
